The Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County is one of 31 coalitions in Florida that works to improve the health and well being of babies and moms in our community. The Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County oversees the following programs and initiatives:

The Healthy Start Program

The Healthy Start Program involves a holistic approach to maternal and child health, encompassing service planning, community involvement, funding and provision of services. Healthy Start provides moms, newborns and families with the resources, support and help they need to develop a healthy pregnancy and a healthy birth. With the primary goal of reducing infant mortality, the Healthy Start Program nurses and social workers provide in-home education on prenatal care, parenting, nutrition and infant health, counseling and access to community resources to pregnant women and infants. This free, voluntary program receives the majority of its referrals from obstetrical care providers and hospitals through the Healthy Start Prenatal or Postnatal Infant Screening form and attempts to offer assistance of any kind to all pregnant women and infants up to age one.

Healthy Families Hillsborough

Healthy Families Hillsborough is part of Healthy Families Florida, a community-based, voluntary home visiting program designed to promote positive parent/child interaction and healthy childhood growth and development, thereby preventing child abuse and neglect.

The program is modeled after the highly successful national Healthy Families America Initiative, which is based on over two decades of research and experience with successful home visitor programs.

Healthy Families offers families of newborns living in targeted areas and who are experiencing stressful life situations home visiting services that are delivered by trained family support workers. The intensity of service is based on the family
